Scrambling the seam on purpose is a bowler confessing that control has stopped paying on a surface giving him nothing.
A wobble seam is an admission, and I like it for that
The wobble ball gets described as a weapon, which flatters it. It is closer to a shrug. A bowler holds the ball loosely, splits his fingers wide of the seam, and lets the whole thing tumble down the pitch on an unstable axis so that nobody, including him, knows which face it will land on. That is not craft the way an outswinger is craft. It is manufactured chaos, deployed because the orderly version stopped working.
And it works, which is the interesting part. On a fifth-day surface, or a flat white-ball pitch where the ball is scuffed and the shine has gone, a conventionally released seam sits up and does nothing at all. The batter can commit early. Introduce the wobble and he cannot, because the deviation is now random rather than intended, and a batter forced to wait plays later and closer to his body, which is exactly where his hands are worst.
The cost is real. You cannot bowl a plan with it. You can bowl a channel and hope. If your field is set for one edge and the ball chooses the other, the catch goes to a vacant region, and I have watched sides leak boundaries behind square because the bowler had no idea what he had just produced. That is why the good exponents send down two or three in an over of orthodox seam rather than making it a permanent setting.
There is also a fitness argument nobody makes. The wobble grip is looser and the release is less forceful through the wrist, which makes it an easier ball on the shoulder late in a long spell. A bowler in his twenty-second over of the day is not going to hold a perfect seam anyway. He may as well scramble it deliberately and take some benefit from the collapse.
My complaint is with how it is being taught. Juniors are shown the wobble before they can present a seam upright at all, because it produces quick results in a net and quick results keep a coach employed.
Learn the boring version first. You need something worth abandoning before abandonment means anything.
