On a surface offering nothing, the spinner whose ball dips does more damage than the one who turns it square.
Revolutions beat sideways turn on a flat pitch
Ask a club cricketer what a good spinner does and he will say the ball turns. Ask a batter who has been dismissed by a good spinner on a lifeless second-day pitch and he will describe something else entirely, usually the sensation of playing a shot too early to a ball that never arrived where he expected.
That is dip, and it comes from revolutions rather than from the surface. A heavily spun ball behaves differently in the air, curving in flight and dropping earlier than a flatter delivery released at the same speed. None of that requires a helpful pitch, which is exactly why it matters. Sideways turn is a partnership between the bowler and the ground, and the ground refuses to cooperate most of the time.
The consequence is a bowler who beats you before the ball pitches. If the drop is a foot shorter than you read, your front foot is already committed, the bat comes down through a line the ball is no longer on, and the resulting edge or leading edge gets written up as a loose shot. Then the same bowler, on the same pitch, gets a delivery to hold its line, and the batter who has adjusted for dip is now late on a straight one.
There is a trade-off and it is real. Bowling with heavy revolutions usually means a slower delivery through the air and more loop, and against a batter willing to use his feet, loop is an invitation. So the skill is not maximum spin, it is maximum spin at a trajectory a batter cannot attack, and the difference between those two is a few degrees of release angle that takes years to find.
I think this is why spinners mature late and why judging one at twenty is close to worthless. The strong wrist and the fast fingers are physical and arrive early. The trajectory is a decision, and it is refined over hundreds of spells against people who keep hitting you.
Watch the ball's flight, not the pitch mark. If it dips, the pitch was never the point.
